HC Deb 12 November 1929 vol 231 c1747W
Mr. ALPASS

asked the Lord Privy Seal if he will state the number, nature, and cost of relief works in the Bristol district in respect of which State assistance has been applied for since the present Government took office; the extent to which grants have actually been approved; and the volume of employment thereby afforded?

Mr. THOMAS

Two schemes in the Bristol district have been submitted under Part I of the Development (Loan Guarantees and Grants) Act, 1929, namely, a water supply scheme involving a total expenditure of £144,000 and a scheme for railway station enlargement costing in all some £1,200,000. A grant has already been approved in the case of the second scheme; the first is under examination. Under Part II of the Act 11 schemes have been submitted, involving expenditure of £62,000 on public baths, £23,000 on roads, £19,000 on sewers and £6,000 on an aerodrome site. Seven schemes have been approved, to a total value of £28,000. It is estimated that the schemes approved will provide employment equivalent to that of about 4,300 men for a year.
