asked the Minister of Labour if she will give the total sum of money devoted to the payment of unemployment benefit and out-of-work donations since 1919 to the latest available date and the amount represented by the contributions of the employers, employés, and the State during that period?

Mr. LAWSON

The total payments of unemployment benefit and out-of-work donation during the period from 1st January, 1919, to 2nd November, 1929, amounted approximately to:

Unemployment benefit 400,530,000
Out-of-work donation 61,940,000

During the same period the contributions paid into the Unemployment Fund amounted approximately to:

£
Employers 155,470,000
Employed persons 134,850,000
Exchequer 106,780,000

Out-of-work donation was not paid out of the Unemployment Fund, but was paid direct by the Exchequer.
