§ Mr. WARDLAW-MILNEasked the Under-Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether any newly constructed railways in Nigeria have been opened for traffic during the past 10 months; how many miles are still under construction; and when the existing programme is expected to be complete?
§ Mr. LUNNIn June, 1928, the Governor of Nigeria reported that the three lines then under construction, totalling 305 miles, were expected to be completed during this year. I have not yet received a final report but I understand that they have been completed and were opened for traffic on 1st October. No further actual construction—apart from the Benue bridge—is in progress, since it is considered that these lines exhaust the present possibilities of remunerative construction. Surveys are being carried out in respect of two main trunk lines one towards Lake Chad and one towards the south west of the Sokoto Province.
