HC Deb 06 November 1929 vol 231 c1056W
Sir N. GRATTAN-DOYLE

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether with a view to securing freer trade within the Empire, he proposes to take steps to bring about reductions of tariffs imposed on Empire imports into the Colonies and Dependencies?

Mr. LUNN

Generally speaking, the duties to which the hon. Member refers have been imposed by the Colonies and Dependencies for revenue purposes, but in a number of cases Empire imports enjoy preferential rates. It is not proposed at present to suggest to Colonial Administrations any alterations in the principles which determine their tariff policy.
