Mr. SCOTT

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what number of staff is employed by the Department of Agriculture now as compared with the staff under the Board of Agriculture for the years 1913 and 1924; the numbers at present employed in connection with land settlement work, agricultural research and education, finance, factorial work, and general work, respectively; and the total cost of running the Department now as compared with the years 1913 and 1924?

As the answer involves a tabular statement I propose, with the Hon. Member's permission, to circulate it with the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Following is the answer:

(i) Total staff employed by the Department of Agriculture for Scotland:—*

  • In 1913, 179 (including 5 part time).
  • In 1924, 406 (including 35 part time).
  • In 1929, 387 (including 38 part time).

(ii) Staff at present employed on—

  1. (a) Land Settlement, 66.
  2. (b) Agricultural Research and Education, 20.
  3. (c) Finance, 40.
  4. (d) Factorial,† 7 (including 1 part time).
  5. (e) General Work,‡ 254 (including 37 part time).

(iii) Estimated administrative expenses of the Department including the estimated cost of services rendered by other Departments:—

* Excludes industrial staff, e.g., farm servants, &c.

† The Land Settlement staff, and a proportion of those engaged on general work are also engaged on Factorial work for part of their time.
