asked the Minister of Health whether he can state the number of able-bodied persons who were in receipt of either indoor or outdoor relief in England and Wales to the last convenient date in 1929; and will he give comparable figures for the corresponding date in 1928?

Separate figures of the number of "able-bodied" persons are not available. The numbers of persons over 16 years of age in receipt of Poor Law relief in England and Wales who were not suffering from sickness, accident or bodily or mental infirmity were as follow:

Indoor. Outdoor.
On 1st January, 1929 72,115 259,297
On 1st January, 1928 72,019 329,534

The average number of persons over 16 years of age in receipt of outdoor relief who were ordinarily engaged in some regular occupation was:
