HC Deb 05 November 1929 vol 231 c880W
Brigadier-General BROWN

asked the Secretary of State for War whether, seeing that the mechanised armoured car squadrons of the Cavalry and Royal Air Force, used recently for the restoration of law and order in Palestine, were handicapped by punctures, which were practically the cause of all their breakdowns, a satisfactory tyre has yet been found to stand the weight of these cars in rough country or are they still being shod with the same tyres?

Mr. SHAW

As a result of the experience of the mechanised armoured car squadron recently in Palestine steps have been taken to re-equip that squadron with a type of tyre less susceptible to puncture. The War Department has for some time past been taking a leading part in collaboration with the civil industry in the development and testing of tyres, but pending the result of experiments and of experience of the tyres sent to Palestine it is too early to say that a tyre satisfying Army requirements has been found.
