Mr. KELLY

asked the Secretary for Mines if he will state the average rate of wages for a normal week paid to men engaged in the tin mines of Cornwall?

Mr. TURNER

The rate of wages varies from 5s. to 8s. per shift for the various grades of day-wage men, with, on the average, higher rates for contract men. The average number of shifts worked per man during the year 1928 was 312.

Mr. KELLY

asked the Secretary for Mines if he will state the average price for black tin in 1927 and 1928 and the average price for metallic tin in 1927 and 1928?

Mr. TURNER

The average value at mines and quarries in 1927 of black tin containing on the average 68 per cent. of metal was £151 9s. 9d. per ton, and in 1928 of black tin containing on the average 64 per cent. of metal £126 1s. 1d. per ton. The average prices of metallic tin per ton for the same years were £288 19s. 3d. and £227 4s. 8d.
