asked the Secretary for Mines if he will state the number of men employed in lead-mining operations in Great Britain and the districts where such men are engaged?

Mr. TURNER

The number of persons employed at the end of June, 1929, at mines at which lead was the principal mineral produced, and in prospecting or development work was 1,772. Of these persons, 737 were employed in the North of England (Cumberland, Durham, Northumberland, Westmorland and Yorkshire), 299 in the Midlands (Derbyshire), 388 in Wales and the Isle of Man, 264 in Scotland, and 84 in Cornwall.
