HC Deb 04 February 1929 vol 224 cc1416-7W
Sir N. GRATTAN-DOYLE

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether the Empire Marketing Board has been issuing propaganda respecting the consumption of Empire dairy products in this country; and what are the percentages of Empire imports to total imports of dairy products into Great Britain in the years 1922, 1926, and 1928?

Mr. AMERY

References to Empire dairy products, both from home and from the Empire overseas, have been a prominent feature of the Board's publicity campaign. No figures are available regarding total imports into Great Britain alone. Of the total quantity of butter imported into the United Kingdom in the years 1922, 1926 and 1928 respectively, the percentages consigned from Empire countries were 51.6, 42.4 and 43.5. In the case of cheese the percentages were 88.1. 86.4 and 84.9 respectively. The figures for 1922 relate to imports into Great Britain and Ireland, whereas for the two later years they relate to imports into Great Britain and Northern Ireland only. In consequence the percentages for 1922 are not comparable with those for 1926 and 1928.
