HC Deb 09 December 1929 vol 233 c45W
Sir G. JONES

asked the Secretary of State for India whether he has any information regarding the proposed construction under the River Hooghly in Calcutta of an electric railway to connect Howrah and the suburbs on the west bank with the city of Calcutta on the east bank; and the probable value of the contract and the date on which operations are likely to commence?

Mr. BENN

I have no definite information as to this project beyond what has appeared in the Press, from which I gather that the suitability of the subsoil for the construction of a tube railway is still being investigated.
