HC Deb 20 November 1928 vol 222 cc1576-7W
Mr. R. YOUNG

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury the number of savings certificates sold and their value in the years 1926, 1927, and 1928, respectively; the number withdrawn in the same periods, with their value and the accrued interest paid to depositors; and the number of investors represented by these transactions?

Mr. SAMUEL

The figures are as follow:

Year. Sales. Repayments.
Number of units of £1. Purchase price. Number of applications for withdrawal. Principal repaid. Accrued Interest paid.
£ £ £
1926 39,638,776 31,711,021 1,439,488 31,462,467 9,765,000
1927 43,722,578 34,978,063 1,588,672 38,596,193 14,305,000
1928 (January to October). 41,613,271 33,290,617 1,461,416 35,929,656 15,331,000

No figures are available regarding the number of investors represented by these transactions. The certificates repaid consist partly of certificates issued at 15s. 6d. and partly of certificates issued at 16s. and the number of units repaid cannot therefore be exactly computed.
