HC Deb 20 November 1928 vol 222 cc1577-8W
Sir R. NEVILLE

asked the Minister of Agriculture (1) what is the estimated number of people in England and Wales and Scotland who are capable of being fed today by food produced in those countries;

(2) what is the estimated maximum population in England and Wales and Scotland which would be capable of being fed by food produced in such countries if the maximum amount of land were under cultivation; and when was such estimated maximum population last fed from such food;

(3) whether he can give an estimate of the average number of days' supply of food produced in England, Wales, and Scotland in each of the years 1913 to 1927, inclusive?

Mr. GUINNESS

I regret that I cannot undertake, within the limits of an answer to a Parliamentary question, to furnish a definite reply in regard to the highly complex problems raised by the hon. Baronet. The subject of the relation of the home production to the total food supply of the country is, however, being studied by my Department, and it is hoped in due course to issue a report which will provide some information bearing on the points mentioned in these questions.
