asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what were the total sums expended by parish councils in Scotland during 1925, 1926 and 1927, respectively, on relief of the able-bodied unemployed?

The total sums expended on relief to the able-bodied unemployed by parish councils in Scotland during the years ended 15th May, 1925, 1926 and 1927 were:

The total sums expended in the year 1926–27 on relief to miners' families during the coal stoppage was £698,405, of which £698,304 was in respect of outdoor relief and £101 in respect of indoor relief. These figures are additional to the able-bodied unemployed figures.
