Mr. BECKETTasked the Home Secretary the number of cases of overcrowding and other insanitary defects in workshops notified to local authorities by factory inspectors during 1925, 1926 and 1997; and the number of these in which summary proceedings were instituted?
§ Sir V. HENDERSONThe number of such cases notified to the local authorities was in 1925, 3,334; in 1926, 3,051; and in 1927, 2,775. I regret I am not able to say in how many of these cases the local authority found it necessary to take summary proceedings, but the reports of the medical officers of health show that the total number of workshop occupiers prosecuted for sanitary offences was 25 in each of the years 1925 and 1926. The figure for 1927 is not yet available.
