HC Deb 27 February 1928 vol 214 c64W
Mr. DAY

asked the Home Secretary at which prisons in England and Wales quarters are being built for prison officials in which convict labour is being employed; whether these houses are two-roomed flats or otherwise; and what is the approximate cost of each house?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

Quarters for subordinate prison officers are being built at Parkhurst Convict Prison, at the local prisons at Brixton, Durham, Leeds, Norwich, Nottingham, Wandsworth and Wakefield, and at the Feltham Borstal Institution. In every case use is being made so far as possible of the labour of the convicts, prisoners or Borstal inmates. Some of the quarters are flats and some are cottages. Each contains five rooms and a scullery, and costs approximately £600.
