HC Deb 12 December 1928 vol 223 c2151W
Mr. KELLY

asked the Minister of Labour the number of men and women registered as employed in the engineering trade in November, 1928; and the number of men and women registered as unemployed in the engineering trade for the same month?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

Estimates of the number of insured persons in individual industries are made once a year on the basis of the exchange of unemployment books which takes place in July. It is estimated that at July, 1928, there were 813,690 men and 76,470 women classified as belonging to the engineering group of industries. This group includes general engineering with engineers' iron and steel, etc., founding; electrical engineering; marine engineering; constructional engineering; and the construction and repair of motor vehicles, cycles and aircraft. At 26th November, 86,612 men and 3,697 women classified as belonging to this group were recorded as unemployed.
