Mr. BURMAN

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury the number of moneylenders' licences issued under the Moneylenders Act, 1927?

Mr. SAMUEL

Licences under the Moneylenders Act, 1927, are annual licences, and the licence years run from 1st August to the following 31st July. For the initial period from 1st January, 1928, the date on which the Act came into operation, up to 31st July, 1928, the Act provided that special part-year licences should be issued at a reduced rate of duty. The number of licences issued up to 30th September last, the latest date for which figures are at present available, was:

For the period from 1st January to 31st July, 1928 4,086
From 1st August to 30th September, 1928, i.e., for the period 1st August, 1928, to 31st July, 1929 3,651
