HC Deb 04 April 1928 vol 215 cc1970-1W
Mr. RHYS DAVIES

asked the Home Secretary on what date the inquiry into the administration of Parkhurst Prison, referred to by him, was held; what matters were investigated; by whom the inquiry was held; what witnesses were heard; whether any person was heard outside the staff of the prison and board of visitors; whether any opportunity was given to persons interested in the welfare of the prisoners to be heard; and what were the precise terms of the Report?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

I think the hon. Member has misunderstood what said. The words I used in my reply of the 21st ultimo were: I made inquiries into the administration of the prison some few months ago and was quite satisfied with what was going on."—[OFFICIAL REPORT, 21st March, 1928; col. 374, Vol. 215.] I did not suggest that any formal investigation such as is implied in this question had been made, and there has in fact been no occasion for any such investigation; I have made such inquiries as from time to time seemed necessary in the ordinary course of my duties, and have myself visited the prison, and I repeat that I was and am satisfied with what is being done at Parkhurst.
