HC Deb 24 November 1927 vol 210 c2072W
Mr. SPOOR

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether he has received a memorial from the London Jute Association asking for legislation to check gambling in jute; whether he is aware that the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce is also in favour of such legislation; and whether he can state the intentions of the Government of India and of His Majesty's Government in the matter?

Earl WINTERTON

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. The London Jute Association was informed that the matter was one primarily for the consideration of the Government of Bengal and not one in which my Noble Friend could offer advice to that Government. He has no information regarding the intentions of the Government of Bengal or the Government of India.
