HC Deb 18 November 1927 vol 210 cc1289-90W
Commander BELLAIRS

asked the Minister of Health what increase has been made in the fees of local registrars of births and deaths since registration was made compulsory about 90 years ago; and, in view of the additional work caused by modern legislation, whether the fees have been the subject of representation by the Registrar-General?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

The fees at present receivable by registrars of births and deaths are substantially those which were fixed by the Births and Deaths Registration Acts of 1836 and 1874. One item of those fees has been increased by the Births and Deaths Registration Act, 1926, while reductions have in some instances been enacted for the public convenience in certain special cases. The question of registrars' remuneration is one which I have had for some time under my consideration with a view to the introduction of amending legislation; but I am not at present in a position to make any announcement on the subject.
