asked the Minister of Labour the total number of joint industrial councils and interim industrial reconstruction committees, respectively; that have been set up, with the numbers set up in each year; how many of each have gone out of operation in each year: how many interim industrial reconstruction committees have been reconstituted

sidy up to the 16th November, 1927, is 5,529,311 cwts. of an estimated wholesale value, duty paid, of £8,250,000. The subsidy paid has amounted to £5,385,908.

Mr. KIRKWOOD

asked the Minister of Agriculture the amount of paid up capital in the case of each of the sugar-beet factories at Kelham, Ely, and Cantley; the proportion of British capital invested in each; the amount of subsidy paid to each; the average price per ton paid to the farmer for the beet root; and the total wages bill of each sugar-beet factory?

The paid up capital of these three factories, as on 31st March, 1927, was:

NOTE.—The number of Joint Industrial Councils in the second column includes in all cases the number of Interim Industrial Reconstruction Committees reconstituted as Joint Industrial Councils which is given in the fourth column.

Of the 27 Joint Industrial Councils and 13 Interim Industrial Reconstruction Committees which have ceased to function 19 and 11 respectively had done so before the end of 1922 and eight and two respectively have done so since.

47 Joint Industrial Councils and five Interim Industrial Reconstruction Committees are still in existence.

No definite figure can be given of the number of employés covered by the councils and committees which are at present in operation, but it is estimated that the number is about 2½ millions.
