HC Deb 15 November 1927 vol 210 c842W
Mr. G. HARVEY

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he is in a position to state what steps, if any, are contemplated by his Department to prevent a general rise in the price of imported meat when the so-called meat war is ended?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

I am informed that the Food Council met representatives of the freight committee of the Argentine chilled meat importers on Friday, 11th November, and discussed with them the possible effects of the settlement of the dispute in that trade. The witnesses expressed the view that, generally speaking, the settlement of the dispute should not have the effect of increasing the cost of meat to the public. The Food Council, who are engaged on an inquiry into retail meat prices and profit margins, are watching the situation closely.
