§ Mr. N. MACLEANasked the Minister of Health if the granting of widows' pensions has had any material effect on the payment of outdoor relief; and, if so, whether he can state the approximate total amount saved to boards of guardians and parish councils?
Mr. CHAMBERLAINAccording to returns received for the period to 27th March, 1926, the direct saving to boards of guardians in England and Wales as the result of the granting of widows' and orphans' pensions and children's allowances was at the rate of £1,768,000 per annum. I am not in a position to give corresponding figures for Scotland.
