HC Deb 02 May 1927 vol 205 c1293W
Sir W. de FRECE

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many of the 32,732 emigrants to Australia in 1926 under the Empire Settlement Act returned to this country unable to find suitable employment?

Mr. AMERY

Of the total number of assisted migrants who proceeded to Australia in 1926 the official records show that six persons have returned of their own accord either because they could not obtain suitable employment or because they were not satisfied with the conditions in Australia. In addition, 25 assisted migrants were granted special permission to return owing to family or business reasons, 22 were returned on medical grounds, and five were returned as undesirable settlers, making a total of 58 returned settlers in all.
