HC Deb 21 February 1927 vol 202 c1417W
Colonel DAY

asked the Home Secretary the number of proceedings that have been instituted during each of the last three years for breaches of the Business Names Act; and what steps are taken by his Department in order to compel firms to comply with the Act in question?

Sir B. CHADWICK

I have been asked to reply. The number of prosecutions instituted by the Board of Trade during each of the last three years for breaches of the Registration of Business Names Act, 1916, is as follows:

1924 17
1925 36
1926 26
In addition to the proceedings instituted by the Board of Trade, proceedings have in a number of cases been taken by local police authorities throughout the country and members of the public, but I have no information as to the number of those cases or as to their result. Whenever the attention of the Board of Trade is drawn to a case where the Act has not been complied with, steps are taken (if necessary by prosecution) to secure compliance with the law.
