asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury the actual numbers of existing staffs in the different departments of the Civil Service in the following grades: general clerical, departmental clerical, and writing assistant?

The number of officers in the general clerical class, including higher clerical officers, on the 1st October last was 23,523. As regards the number of writing assistants, I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given to the hon. Member for Leith (Mr. E. Brown) on the 28th November last. Particulars as to the number of officers in the departmental clerical classes on 1st January next will be available early in the new year.
