asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury the number of applications recently received from Customs and Excise clerks for consideration for promotion to the officer grade; the number finally selected for promotion; the age of each promotee; and whether the promotee was in each case an ex-service man?

Mr. SAMUEL

The number of applications referred to was 285; the number finally selected for promotion was 10. The selected candidates were born on 21st August, 1897, 29th September, 1897, 11th July, 1898, 27th July, 1898, 3rd February, 1899, 18th March, 1899, 6th June, 1899, 21st April, 1900, 23rd July, 1900, and 31st July, 1900. Each of them is an ex-service man.
