§ Mr. JOHNSTONasked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that one vacancy as a joiner in Stornoway, in the island of Lewes, was offered to nine unemployed joiners in Dundee; whether he is aware that the first man accepted the employment and has heard nothing further about the post; and whether the three men who, for family reasons, subsequently refused the offer have been refused unemployment benefit?
§ Sir A. STEEL-MAITLANDIt was thought necessary to submit three applicants for this post, and it had to be offered to eight claimants for benefit (not nine, as stated on the question) before three were found who were willing to accept it. In the case of the five refusals benefit was disallowed by the Insurance Officer, and in two cases the disallowance has been upheld by the Court of Referees; in one other case the appeal to the Court of Referees is pending, and in the remaining two cases there has been no appeal.
