HC Deb 06 December 1927 vol 211 c1200W
Mr. JOHNSTON

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is aware that the Second Anglo-Scottish Beet-Sugar Corporation, Limited, at Preston-hall, Cupar, is engaging men at wages of £2 18s. per week for a seven-day week of 12 hours with nothing extra for overtime or Sunday work; and whether he will make the Fair Wages Clause applicable to State subsidised beet-sugar factories in Scotland?

Sir J. GILMOUR

I am informed by the Second Anglo-Scottish Beet-Sugar Corporation, Limited, that they employ as "sample trolleymen" at their factory at Cupar a number of men who are paid at the rate of £2 18s. per week of seven days of 12 hours each. With regard to the second part of the question I would refer the hon. Member to the terms of Section 3 of the British Sugar (Subsidy) Act, 1925. I am not aware that any dispute has arisen between the workmen in question and the Corporation; nor have the Board of Agriculture for Scotland received any representations in the matter for reference by them to the Industrial Court.
