HC Deb 25 February 1926 vol 192 c740W
Mr. SHORT

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the total expenditure of public money since 31st December, 1918, due to our occupancy of Iraq; and what proportion has been incurred as a result of our acceptance of the mandate of the League of Nations?

Mr. AMERY

The total expenditure from His Majesty's Exchequer in Iraq since 1st April, 1920, is as follows:

£
1920–21 (approximately) 32,000,000
1921–22 23,355,950
1922–23 7,807,342
1923–24 5,740,358
1924–25 4,479,754
1925–26 (provided in Estimates) 4,118,400

I regret that I am not in a position to give the inforatimon asked for in regard to 1919–20, nor is it possible to calculate with any accuracy the proportion of the above sums which could be said to be directly due to the acceptance by this country of the mandate for Iraq.
