§ Mr. McNEILLIn general, industrial staffs of the Civil Service are conditioned to a working week varying from 44 to 48 hours, according to the nature of their occupation, whilst manipulative and messengerial staffs are employed on the basis of a weekly attendance of 48 hours. The above categories comprise nearly three-quarters of the total staff. The rest of the staff of the Civil Service is normally engaged on the basis of an352W attendance of seven hours a day in London and eight hours a day in the provinces, with a half-holiday on Saturday when the state of business permits. The weekly hours of attendance of temporary clerical staffs are usually 42 or 44.
