HC Deb 04 March 1924 vol 170 cc1215-6W
Viscount CURZON

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether his attention has been called to the fact that 1,760 vacancies in the tax inspecting staff were to be filled entirely by the transfer of permanent civil servants; and whether he will undertake to throw a proportion of these posts open to ex-service temporary civil servants and make the necessary allowance in regard to age to compensate for war service?

Mr. GRAHAM

The Noble Lord is under a misapprehension. The number 1,760 represents the total authorised staff of the Inspectorate, of whom a substantial number are ex-service men, including former temporary civil servants and others. In order to recruit in some measure from within as well as from without the established Civil Service, steps are being taken to fill a limited number of vacancies from this source by selection. The avenue from outside is a competitive examination, for which temporary civil servants are eligible if otherwise qualified, with an age allowance in respect of war service.
