HC Deb 02 June 1924 vol 174 cc900-1W
Mr. STRANGER

asked the Minister of Labour whether any steps are being taken to train and to employ ex-service men blinded in the War as telephone operators in Government Departments?

Mr. SHAW

No steps are taken by this Department to train blinded ex-service men in telephone operating, but in a very limited number of cases in certain Government Departments, where the local conditions are appropriate to their employment, blinded ex-service men have been appointed, through the Joint Substitution Board, as telephone attendants.

Mr. STRANGER

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury how many blind persons are employed as typists or shorthand-typists in each of the Government Departments; and if all these persons are ex-service men?

Mr. GRAHAM

Following is a statement of the number of blinded ex-service men placed by the Joint Substitution Board as shorthand-typists in Government Departments in London and the South-Eastern area up to the 30th May.

Board of Trade (Clearing Office Enemy Debts) 8
Ministry of Labour 4
Inland Revenue 1

I have no information as to any other cases in which blind persons are employed as shorthand-typists.
