§ Sir B. CHADWICKasked the Prime Ministry whether, having regard to the increasing discomfort suffered by Members, owing to inadequate accommodation in the Parliament buildings, he can grant facilities for discussion of the Motion standing in the name of the hon. Member for Wallasey in order that, if the House so decide, a committee may be set up without delay—
That this House is of the opinion that the accommodation provided by the House, of Commons is quite inadequate for present-day requirements and that when the Houses of Parliament were built such large membership and staff as the present were not contemplated; that, in particular, the complete lack of private office or even desk 1778W and telephone accommodation is a serious hindrance to Members in their work; that Members are practically inaccessible by telephone from outside; that they have no suitable accommodation in which to receive business visitors; that in these respects the House of Commons is far behind Parliamentary buildings in the Dominions and foreign countries; that suitable buildings or sites on which buildings may be erected are available within easy reach -of the division bell; and that it is expedient that a Select Committee be appointed to investigate and report."—[Sir B.
