HC Deb 24 July 1924 vol 176 cc1538-9W
Sir C. OMAN

asked the Minister of Health what were the figures of percentage of infant mortality of the other urban districts of Shropshire in the year 1923, when the percentage of Market Drayton sunk to 85 per 1,000; and what sums were expended in that year by the guardians of Market Drayton and any maternity or child welfare centre in that urban district on necessitous mothers, expectant mothers, and infants under 19 months of age?

Mr. WHEATLEY

The rates (deaths under one year per 1,000 births) for each of the municipal boroughs and urban districts of Shropshire (other than Market Drayton) in 1923 were as follow:

Bishop's Castle M. B. 182*
Bridgnorth M. B. 63
Church Stretton —†
Dawley 42
Ellesmere 48
Ludlow M.B. 49
Newport 34
Oakengates M. B. 59
Oswestry M.B. 74
Shrewsbury M.B. 62
Wellington 35
Wem 51
Wenlock M.B. 34
Whitchurch 45
* 11 Births; 2 Deaths.
† 24 Births; 0 Deaths.

As regards the second part of the question, I have no separate figures of the expenditure of the guardians or the county council in the urban district of Market Drayton on the classes of persons referred to.
