HC Deb 22 July 1924 vol 176 cc1143-4W
Mr. D. G. SOMERVILLE

asked the Minister of Transport whether his attention has been called to an invention by Mr. J. A. Montgomery, of Walney, Barrow-in-Furness, for an automatic safety catch for railway carriages; and, if not, whether, in the interest of the workers, he will investigate its utility?

Mr. GOSLING

My attention has not previously been called to this particular invention, although numerous devices for controlling the locking and unlocking of railway carriage doors have been brought to the notice of my Department. I am not pressing the railway companies to adopt appliances of the kind, and would call the hon. Member's attention to the remarks on this subject on page 13 of the Report on Railway Accidents for the year 1922, of which I am sending the hon. Member a copy.
