Mr. DIXONasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer why the Government is still paying unemployment pay to young men and women who formerly were in, and are capable of, domestic service when there are employers willing and anxious to provide them with employment?
§ Sir M. BARLOWI have been asked to reply. Private domestic employment is not insurable, and persons who are normally employed in private domestic service are not, in general, eligible for unemployment benefit. In addition, any other applicant for whom domestic service is suitable employment is not entitled to receive unemployment benefit if he or she refuses such employment. I would remind my hon. Friend that I have recently appointed a Committee to inquire into the present conditions as to the supply of female domestic servants, and in particular into the effect of the Unemployment Insurance Scheme in this connection.
