HC Deb 26 March 1923 vol 162 c51W
Sir H. NIELD

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what is the latest information with respect to the relations existing between the Turks and the Armenians; what is the date of the latest act of reprisal, assassination, or act of violence, and by whom committed; and is there any ground for believing that any massacre or organised acts of violence are imminent?

Mr. McNEILL

In answer to the first part of the question, it is understood that a slight improvement has recently taken place in the relations between the Turks and their Armenian subjects. The number of the latter remaining in Turkey is now, however, comparatively small. In answer to the second part of the question, the last events of this nature regarding which His Majesty's Government have information took place after the fall of Smyrna in September, 1922. I do not, however, consider that any useful purpose would be served by discussing the responsibilities for those events at the present time. So far as His Majesty's Government are aware, the answer to the last part of the question is in the negative.
