HC Deb 21 March 1923 vol 161 cc2592-3W
Mr. R. DAVIES

asked the Minister of Labour if he has made any arrangements with the French Government to supply British unemployed workmen to work in France; and, if so, what those arrangements are; how many persons are likely to be employed in this connection; and what are the conditions of employment?

Sir M. BARLOW

This matter is still under discussion with the French authorities, and I cannot at the present stage give any detailed information. I may mention, however, that my attention had been drawn to possible opportunities for employment in France, particularly in the devastated areas. Accordingly I sent officers to investigate the matter in co-operation with His Majesty's Ambassador, and the French authorities, and as a result, I hope it may be found possible to offer a certain number of vacancies for the consideration of persons not in employment in this country.
