HC Deb 26 April 1923 vol 163 cc688-9W
Mr. BOWERMAN

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War if he has received a joint request from the Borough Council of Deptford and Greenwich that he should receive a deputation desirous of urging the re-opening of the Deptford cattle market either for the purposes for which it was originally established or for shipping, manufacturing, or warehousing purposes, in order that it may be put to full commercial advantage, thereby relieving unemployment in Deptford and Greenwich; and whether he will give favourable consideration to the councils' request to receive a deputation?

Mr. GWYNNE

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. I shall naturally be happy to consider the question of receiving a deputation if it be found to be necessary, but, the Army Council are already fully alive to the desirability of giving up the eastern part of the area, and the matter is now under active consideration in conjunction with the landlords. There is no doubt that the western part of the area is still required. In the circumstances I am not sure that the reception of a deputation at the present time would serve any useful purpose.
