HC Deb 26 April 1923 vol 163 c693W
Mr. J. DAVISON

asked the Secretary of State for Air what arrangements, if any, were made for the absorption into civilian clerical employment of a temporary nature in his Department of women demobilised from His Majesty's Forces, clerical units overseas or at home, from 1918 to October, 1920?

Sir S. HOARE

Reduction of establishments and of expenditure made the absorption of the demobilised women on any large scale impracticable, but a fairly considerable number were retained temporarily as civilian clerks at the units from which they had been demobilised as Women's Royal Air Force clerks.

Mr. LUNN

asked the Secretary of State for Air what was the highest number of women employed in his Department as civilian subordinates attached to outstations reached prior to October, 1920?

Sir S. HOARE

So far as can be ascertained, the highest number of women employed as civilian subordinates at Air Ministry out-stations prior to October, 1920, was 2,895.
