HC Deb 12 April 1923 vol 162 c1325W
Lieut. - Commander KENWORTHY

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what statistics he has in his possession showing the distribution of nationalities in Eastern Galicia; what percentage of non-Polish population, including Jews, these figures show; what is the source of these statistics; and whether the Council of Ambassadors had the figures of population before them when they advised the annexation of the province by Poland?

Mr. McNEILL

We have no more recent or more reliable figures than those given in the last Austrian census of religions. According to these statistics there are just under 3,000,000 Ruthenians, just over 1,000,000 Poles, and a little over 500,000 Jews. The Ambassadors' Conference were in possession of all the necessary data relating to this question before their decision was taken.
