HC Deb 09 May 1922 vol 153 c2027W
Mr. MACLEAN

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many million pounds were on deposit on savings banks In the United Kingdom in 1921 or the last complete year for which figures were available, and the rate of interest paid?

Sir R. HORNE

I can only deal with the savings banks for which the State is responsible. On the 20th November last the cash deposits in the Trustee savings banks were approximately £73,000,000. On the 31st December last the deposits in the Post Office Savings Bank were approximately £264,500,000 Interests on the deposits, which are repayable at call, is at the rate of 2½ per cent. per annum.
