RENWICKasked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Overseas Trade Department whether he is aware that the cable companies are still charging triple rates for urgent cables, although this extra charge was instituted during the War and was understood to be a War measure only; and will he make representations to the cable companies urging them to revert to pre-war charges and conditions?
§ Mr. KELLAWAYI have been asked to answer this question. As I explained to the hon. and gallant Member for Newcastle East (Major Barnes) on the 21st February in answer to a similar question, the "urgent" service was introduced as the result of representations from the commercial community; and while the delay remains abnormal and an urgent service is available in foreign countries I do not think it would be in the interests of British cable users to abolish it.
