HC Deb 04 December 1922 vol 159 c1259W
Mr. SHINWELL

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport whether in the construction of roads under Government schemes due regard will be given to the growing needs of motor transport by extra widening of such roads; and to what extent the Government have issued instructions to this effect?

Lieut.-Colonel ASHLEY

I am fully alive to the urgent need of road widenings and in a Circular issued to local authorities on the 22nd June last road-widenings were placed first in a list of desirable improvements. In the construction of new arterial roads, widths up to 100 or 120 feet are being taken between fences.
