HC Deb 04 December 1922 vol 159 c1223W
Mr. F. GRAY

asked the Minister of Labour whether, having regard to the present state of unemployment, the Government will offer such terms to local authorities providing employment as will lead to competition among such authorities to participate in the benefits of such terms?

Major BOYD-CARPENTER

An extension of the terms of State assistance to local authorities prepared to undertake relief work was announced by my right hon. Friend the Minister of Labour last Thursday. Having regard to the burden on the National Exchequer the Government are satisfied that these terms afford a generous measure of assistance from the general taxpayer to the local ratepayer, and I have every reason to hope that under the extended terms relief schemes will be undertaken or pressed on by very many local authorities.
