HC Deb 04 December 1922 vol 159 cc1224-5W
Mr. HURD

asked the Minister of Labour if he can take steps to include in the employment overseas section of the Ministry of Labour "Gazette" the employment figures for Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa in addition to those of Canada, which are already given?

Sir M. BARLOW

It is unfortunately not possible to adopt the hon. Member's suggestion as regards New Zealand or South Africa, since it is not the practice of these Dominions to compile periodical statistics of unemployment similar to those published regularly by the Canadian Government. In Australia, however, trade union unemployment percentages are computed officially once a quarter only, and as these are now cabled by the Commonwealth to Australia House, I shall be able, through the courtesy of the High Commissioners in London, to publish them in future issues of the Ministry of Labour "Gazette."
