HC Deb 03 August 1922 vol 157 cc1719-20W
Sir A. HOLBROOK

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury what is the normal yearly wastage in the Civil Service caused by ill-health, death, and retirements under the age limit?

Mr. YOUNG

The average numbers of superannuation awards made each year to established civil servants, or their representatives, on the basis of the last three years, were approximately as follow:—

On retirement due to ill-health 1,200
On death 520
On retirement on account of age 2,200
The Government Actuary has estimated that, on the basis of pre-War experience, the rates of wastage per thousand of the active staff were:—
Ill-health 5.3
Death 3.2
Age 5.3
These figures relate, of course, to the age constitution which obtained in the Civil Service as a whole during the period covered by the investigation.
