HC Deb 11 April 1922 vol 153 cc256-7W
Mr. MILLS

asked the Secretary for Scotland if he is aware that in the case of an industrial insurance policy, for which premiums were paid for upwards of 26 years, on the life of James Lothian, late of 6, Delamere Crescent, Padding-ton, the relatives have been unable to obtain any payment or explanation from the Scottish Legal Insurance Company of Glasgow; and whether, in view of the prohibitive expense and difficulty of residents in London suing in the Scottish Courts for sums of ten or twenty pounds, he will cause inquiry to be made as to the extent to which policies held by working people are disputed by this company, and the best means of securing the prompt settlement of all just claims?

Mr. YOUNG

I have been asked to reply. I am informed by the Scottish Legal Life Assurance Society that there were four policies on the life of James Lothian. Two of these were produced with the death certificate and were paid at once. The claimant has failed to produce the other two policies, but her soli- citors have been informed that payment will be made if an indemnity is given against any other person producing or claiming on these policies. I have no reason to suppose that this society seeks to evade prompt payment of its legal liabilities.
